7/8 Song analysis

This instrumental started from Jack playing in the time signature 7/8 and me trying to play along to his drums. It didn't take too long until we started to create the song which we simply named 7/8. I took a lot of influence from Jaco Pastorius on this track, the way I approached the bass on this track. I compare our original 7/8 to the extra track off of the debut album, by Jaco titled Jaco Pastorius, called 6/4 Jam which is Jaco jamming around a bass line that is the main melody in the song. This is somewhat similar to 7/8 but we added in Pre-Choruses, Choruses and a bridge. The rhythm section within this song is very strong with the bass and drums really managing to groove and lock in with one another. The song also features time signature changes. This is probably our longest song along with Preadolescent.

This is the structure for the song:

Intro - 7/8

Verse - 7/8

Pre-Chorus - 8/8

Pre-Verse (Same as the Intro) - 7/8

Verse - 7/8

Pre-Chorus - 8/8

Chorus - 8/8

Pre-Verse (Same as the Intro) - 7/8

Verse - 7/8

Pre-Chorus - 8/8

Chorus - 8/8

Bridge - 8/8

Pre-Verse (Same as the Intro) - 7/8

Pre-Chorus - 8/8

Chorus - 8/8

Pre-Chorus (Played in 8/8 but finishes a beat early)

These are the chords for the song:

Intro - Bm7

Verse - Bm7, Emaj7

Pre-Chorus - Amaj7, G#m7

Chorus - C#m7, Dmaj7, F#m7, G#m7

Bridge - Bm7, F#m7, G#m7, Amaj7

This song features lots of interesting chords and melodies. The main bass melody which features in the Intro and Verse was created by me jamming with the drums in B Dorian. Nobody plays the verse chords for Rowan is playing the same melody as me on guitar and Marco is playing an entirely different melody on his Trumpet. We play melodies around these chords. The next chord in the verse is Emaj7 where I play a similar bassline to the mode B Dorian. I play around E Mixolydian in this section of the verse. Jack plays halves in this section, when it changes to Emaj7. The verse loosely follows a blues structure. First chord is B, goes to the 4th and back to the first chord except from it doesn't go to the 5th like most 12 bar blues would.

Marco's trumpet is a key part of this song for I see it as the main melody which is our substitute for vocals. His style of play really reminds me of jazz trumpet players like the great Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Freddie Hubbard. He plays trumpet throughout the song, Marco also plays with a mute, Miles Davis was known for playing with a mute.

Rowan has a solo in the bridge. He doesn't use any distortion on this track, he usually has a nice clean tone.
