So far we have had 3 lessons on how to rig a stage with Nick which I have managed to learn a lot of different important skills that will help me to develop in this course and these skills will become usfeul in later life for I wish to have a career in the music industry.
I learnt that 15 inch passive speakers are used to amplify instruments, this is for FOH (Front Of House), and that the instruments and leads all connect to the PA system which allows you to control the levels and EQ of the instruments. The overall gain is another function of the PA system. PA systems are frequently used in pods by vocalists and keyboardists. The PA system always goers to the mains.
I also learnt about all the leads that are used to generate sound. Speakon leads are plugged from the speakers which go to the PA system. The speakon leads have lock clips which stop the leads from coming out of the speaker due to vibrations.
There are two types of main monitors that we use at college. Passive and Active monitors. Passive and active monitors are both used which are both 15 inch. The passive monitors connect to the active monitors, which use phantom power, which then go to the PA. The active monitor can then be connected to the PA system via a jack to jack lead.
We learnt about all the different leads that are used. Jack to jack lead, XLR, speakon lead, kettle lead.
Health and safety is also very important. Turn down the volumes before plugging in or taking out your instrument, speakers or monitors to stop popping/feedback. Tuck away the leads to stop people from tripping.
We also had a Minimalist Equipment Challenge which consisted of using as little equipment to power a live performing band. We were given questions by Nick...
What usual stage equipment has been omitted?
Monitors, cabs/amps, less leads, acoustic drum kit.
What size speakers are being used and why have you opted for them?
12 inch would be best because they’re easier to transport.
How are you monitoring your performance?
Angle the speakers so that you can hear your own instruments. Not too much though because they could
feedback on the mic. Bring a portable PA.
What alternative equipment have you selected to ensure the performance can still go ahead?
Electric drum kit or a cajon. Portable PA system.
What combination of cables (including mains) are required?
XLR for mics. Jack leads for bass, guitar, drums and keys. Kettle leads amplification. Mains for monitors.
We were also given a Crossword Quiz, which was designed to instil our Stage Rigging knowledge and enhance our industry terminology.
