Recording our original song

The first thing we did today was record our original song with our old band. We didn't record all of our track because Charlotte wasn't in so we decided to record Xana's drums, my bass and Owen's lead guitar. We will record Elesa's guitar at another time and Charlotte's vocals. It took us the whole lesson to set up the drums, set up cubase and actually record our parts. We hadn't practised the song together as a band for a long time because we were moved into our new bands so it took us a longtime to get everything down. I kept on messing up on the bass and completely forgot where each part would come in, I felt lost at certain points. I would have done better if I would have known the track and been comfortable enough to even perform it on stage again let alone learn it again which was the situation I was in. The drums would sometimes go out of time due to Xana missing a beat and it would result in us all going out of time. I now know that it's important to practise along with a metronome to prevent such timing mistakes and to rether to everything as bars, for example: the chorus is 4 bars and the verse is 8 bars, so this can then help with the change in each section so that I know where the verse, chorus, bridge and each part come in. We had to practise the song a few times and I think that on the 5th take we managed to finally get it down. I've learnt that it's important to learn the material before entering the studio for in the music industry, you have to book the studio and you won't be learning the parts in the studio, you'll waste your time. Time is money and learning the parts whilst in the studio will be a bad option.
I completely forgot my bass solo so I had to quickly on the spot come up with a solo by using the Bb Natural Minor scale to help me come up with some melodies that I could add to my bass solo. I think this was a good way to challenge my playing ability to help improve my musicianship. I was also playing a five string bass which is also another challenege for me. I'm usually used to playing a four string bass so it feels a lot bigger when I use a five string, there are more frets and theres an extra string that I have to mute therefore it's helping to develop my playing ability.
