I wrote my lyrics today which were very hard, I decided to go for the more political route rather than the original plan of writing lyrics similar to Pearl Jam. They do have a few political songs like "Even Flow" and "Bush Leaguer" but i was going for a more sensitive approach like "Present Tense" or "Black" but this proved to be too hard. Lyrically, Pearl Jam are brilliant and they're very hard to match so I struggled at trying to write lyrics at a high standard like Eddie Vedders and I felt that when I would come up with some ideas that they'd be too cliche and that there was a lack of originality. So my lyrics ended up looking more like Public Enemy rhymes or bars from a Rage Against The Machine song. I think that these two acts are so powerful in how they can move people by the sheer power of their lyrics and open minds to new ideas and beliefs. It's also important how they say it how it is, they're not afraid to say the truth. Ice Cube is another artist who tells the truth without worrying about the consequences and thats the way it should be, you should be able to work your rights and freedom of speech is a thing which Ice Cube truly puts to the test. He's unfortunately declared as being controversial, especially when it comes to songs like "F**K Tha Police", the NWA song from their debut album Straight Outta Compton, but he frankly states how police brutality is an actual thing and opens the worlds eyes to a great problem which the black youth in america face and it's still a problem.
